Week 8 Literature Review

For this last week, which is week 8, you will put all of your work together in a 2-3 page literature review. This work will analyze the sources you have selected to best represent your research question. Please do not just recycle your old papers. While it is ok to specifically select citations and their corresponding passages, I would prefer you select new material more closely aligned with your new research abilities. 
You are able to re-use up to four of your previous citations, but I would encourage new information and paragraphs not just reusing your all your old assignments.

Not a research paper. Focus on the main articles in your field and how they assist your work.  2-3 page literature review, double spaced.

Short for a reason focused on the what has been done in the field, who is the top players are and what still needs to be done. (badke, 2011).

What is the best work for the topic or issue?

The condensed style should help you to focus answer your question and prove to me as the instructor reader how the articles assisted to answer your final paper.

6 sources required three of which are journals. You can use up to four of your previous articles.

In the introduction you should:

a. define or identify the general topic, issue or area of concern

b. point out overall trends in what has already been published

c. establish your point of view for reviewing the literature [Include your research question!]

d. indicate the organization of the review

II. Body
In the body you should:

A. group research studies and other relevant literature according to a common theme [for example, you may find prevailing theories and/or practices involved with your research; you can use these as thematic sections for the body of your literature review]

B. summarize each item of the literature appropriately according to its significance

C. compare and evaluate each item of the literature

D. provide topic sentences at the beginning of paragraphs and summary sentences at the end of sections to help the reader understand what the main issues are

III. Conclusion

In the conclusion you should:

a. summarize the literature maintaining the focus presented in the introduction

b. evaluate the current "state of the art" [or state of the topic that represents your research question] [by] pointing out gaps in the literature, inconsistencies and issues that are important for future study

c. conclude by giving some insight into the relationship between your topic and a larger area of study or area of professional practice

Week 7: Annotated Bibliographies

To make sure this week’s assignment is in the correct formatting, review the APA Annotated Bibliography sample provided by OWL Purdue.

You should have a total of 6 total sources for your Annotated Bibliography, 3 of the 6 need to be journals. You can use up to 4 sources from previous assignments.

Why only 4 previous assignments? With all that you have learned throughout this class you may have found new articles that better reflect your new research abilities or new materials that are more closely related to your topic. You should expand on your previous weeks and find two new articles or books more closely related with the research question.

REMINDER: NO RESEARCH NOTES THIS WEEK! Your research notes should be written into the second half of your paragraph or break into a second paragraph. The start of each paragraph should be an overview of the document and why it was selected and the second paragraph your CRAAP research notes

Also in the week 7 for Blackboard I have posted the Powerpoint that the Hybrid class uses during lecture. Their may be some notes that are valuable to you for this week to help you better understand the assignment.

I am sad to say I am seeing so few of you either keeping up with your blog posts or in some cases not replying at all to your peers. This makes it hard for me and also yourselves.  The reason being I am marking zeros when I see no work. There is no reason not to complete a weekly post to and an easy way to keep your grade. These are pass fail as I am not marking you down for how you choose to express yourself. I will give credit at a 10% reduction if you send me a new blog post late but realize it is not the same. These writings are supposed to be a written reflection of each week’s work.
Blogs are a great way to express yourself through your research journey with your findings, hang-ups or successes and I have seen some great blog writing in these last few weeks.  Just make sure you do each weeks work on time so others can comment on it.

Here is a listing of the top Open Access Journals that you can use for this week 6.

Important to note that some articles may be abstracts and not the full and complete text. A citation or article may lead outside the database to another source that requires purchase. Email me if you have problems navigating to find an article related to your topic.

Also you may have a broad range of articles at your disposal numbering in the thousands or very few that are not relevant to your topic. These databases are not as fluid as Leatherby Libraries and the databases like Academic Search Premier.

Make sure you choose a database closer to your topic. For week 6 both DOAJ -Directory of Open Access Journals & OAJSE - Open Access Search Engine, are your best bet to find articles across multiple subjects.

Catching up with blog grading...

Contact me if you do not have a grade for one of your assignments or you feel I have graded one of your assignments improperly.

While I was behind on the blog grades I have been reading work but had not assigned grades yet. Blog posts are more a reflection of the week and I have yet to really remove points as long as you did the assignment and posted replies to your classmates. Everything from this point should be up to date.

A Zero grade :(

I had to give zeros to some of you as a marker grade until the full assignment could be completed. The leatherby libraries website is a bit confusing and several went into the library catalog in the middle of the page. This usually leads you to a number of titles most of which are on the shelves in Irvine, CA. I sent out zeros to make sure everyone was on the same page as to how to access database materials, ebooks and articles. In any classroom you can access online articles and go to google books. In some cases I still gave a grade if you did get to the databases first and then choose another location. While it is possible to access ebooks from the online catalog the regular books on the shelf in the actual library overrun and overpower your search results in sheer number. You are more likely to find relevant materials in ebsco than through the online catalog. The online catalog will not give you a full search of the material until you are in the database.

Empirical Research Week 5

Week 5 focuses on Empirical Research

™Empirical - based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic (p. 569)The Scientific Method has it basis on empirical research. Making calculations based on observation experience rather than just theory. Empirical research generates knowledge derived from observation or experimentation as opposed to theory™Typically, empirical research articles are written in a standardized format that outline the research study or experiment and include the following sections:•Abstract•Introduction and Literature Review•Methods•Results•Discussion or Conclusion
•References (or literature cited)

For academic search premier I would recommend using emperical research as a keyword and then in the follwoing keyword box type your subject.

Other possible searches are "empirical evidence" or even "observation"

Using Empirical evidence as a keyword search you should see empirical research as a keyword in bold for the articles you examine. It should show up in either the abstract or the subject terms. For your assignment paragraph I need empirical article and I would like to see in your paper what material did the authors link to empirical research? what did they observe or examine?

Week 4 Step by step to peer reviewed

Hello class, for week four we are examining peer-reviewed articles.
One of the class asked for a step by step so here we go! :)

Your best bet to finding these articles is either Academic Onefile or Academic Search Premier. Make sure you click the Scholarly Peer-Reviewed Journals box as well as a full text box.







Peer reviewed articles are examined and analyzed for content from those within their professional field. For instance a librarian writing a scholarly article may ask other professional librarians who have written on a particular topic of the field, how the material should be written.

(Peer review box for Academic Search Premier)

Most peer reviewed articles write in an acknowledgement for those that reviewed the work. In some cases this can be found at the beginning or end of an article. If this information cannot be found examie your work for their authors and how many are apart of your citation. Many of the peer reviewed articles have more than one author and all of the authors are listed in the citation. For the CRAAP Criteria in your paragraph you might say ___, and ___ and ___ worked together to make sure this study on ___ was accurate for the field.

Leatherby Libraries available from..

I will never mark of points for this but just a reminder.  You do not need the web address for your Leatherby libraries citation. By APA standards it is really a print source even though it has been made digital.

Its starts looking ugly if you took many steps to find your article and the URL gets longer, sometimes several lines worth.

Also in many cases the article will not work if your reader tries to click on it. Instead when you find an article you can save time by clicking the button on the right is listed as "cite". So for this reason do not include the available from for you leatherby libraries assignment just click the cite button as marked and find the APA citation as listed using the cite button... Google Advanced Search - Week 1 info

As I read through your week one papers I found and interesting concept. As we examined Google advanced search, for part two of assignment one it is interesting to note that the first link to Google advanced in a Google search is in fact for Google Canada so I had quite a few Google searches returned to me with the URL. Google.ca rather .com.















Not that this is a problem but it is important to note the URL from which you are extracting your source its just as much crap, or CRAAP criteria you should be examining for your work. The URL tells you a lot abut your source or article just as a regular article title will.


It is also interesting to note that several of you did not see the big deal with Google advanced. I would suggest all of you take another look at this tool. I would recommend examining the site using .edu in the domain search and .pdf as your file extension

Week 3 Ebooks

This week we are examining eBooks. The eBook collection for Leatherby Libraries is the fourth listing down in the electronic resources section. You will follow the same procedure as we used for Academic Search Premier. For this weeks’ assignment find one eBook that is related to your topic/career.

Student posting issues for blog wk2

Several of you were having issues creating a new post for week 2.

First of all make sure you are signed into your gmail or sign in at the top right of your blog.

If you click sign in at the top right to your gmail the link sign in will lead you to your blog your screen should look like this.

You will then have the the option to create a new post.

Or you can sign into your gmail and then go back to your blog URL.

You will see your gmail account, new post, design, and sign out. 

You can click new post or design to change the features and this will also link you back to the option to create a new post.

Comments: Although it lists differently in two places you will be responding to one of your classmates blogs, although I do encourage more comments for class discussion you will only be graded on one.

Your assignment topic: A question was asked about our topic for the assignments. Your topic that you will be working on throughout this semester is your career focus. This was chosen because it was believed that students would not mind working through their career choice and would rather find articles on this topic than something else they may not be interested in or have little to know interest. So for your assignments you will be examining your career or future career as your topic. What degree are you pursing? what field are you in now and what will the outcome be after your degree? These are not questions you have to answer for the assignment, rather they are things just to think about for the work ahead. Articles for anything relating to your career or have interest in is a suitable topic for your class assignments. 

Week 2! Deep Web & Research

For your assignment this weeks we will be examining the deep web. Brandman’s Leatherby libraries databases are one such example of the deep web. Our libraries database queries are user generated, as you create a search for an article or subject. Not strictly online and also password protected and therefore part of what is called the Deep web/ Invisible web/ or Hidden Web. For more on this topic Read the short paragraph from Open Education Database. Remember that the material found here has been digitized and is not an online source. 
REPEAT The journals and articles you find through Leatherby libraries are not online sources, rather print sources that have been turned into digital files to read. Much in the same way most e-books are print first and then turned digital.
Make sure to fully read this weeks’ assignment .pdfs on Blackboard. You will find one article through Leatherby Libraries and one article through Google Advanced. Make sure your create citations for each of the articles you find.

New Blogs! :)

Everyone has done an excellent job getting set up on Blogger and I was happy to see how many of you quickly finished the first two assignments for the week before the deadline.  Throughout the week as I have done, I will continue to update our class blog list and post grades for work as soon as possible. 5 Points for each assignment will be deducted for those that do not send me their blog and blog post before Midnight 11-3-14, allowing an extra day for the first week. I have yet to hear anyone struggling with the assignment. If I do not see questions or responses, I have no way of knowing what problems the class may be encountering.

Week 1 - Welcome & Introduction

Hello students and welcome to my LBSU 302 blog research blog post. My name is John Macomber and I am a professional librarian, with a wife and two kids, with another kid, a boy on the way the end of November. 

I have a Master's in Library and Information Science is from San Jose State University and I am on the last class before my dissertation for my Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Capella University.

I have taught for Brandman University for over a year as a hybrid instructor. This is my first course as an online only instructor.

In your blog posts I should see: a 4-5 sentence introduction of yourself that provides the following information:

• How long you have attended Brandman University
